Interesting and fun new titles

 Here are some new (or republished) titles:



I couldn't resist reading this, as the movie is wonderful....and the all-in-one film edition is equally lovely.  I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it is cute and fun and is DEFINITELY a good cuppa for me.   =)






Gokurakugai is a fun story.....essentially about several human(ish) characters who help fix problems, even if your problem is a monster who eats people.  This is an enjoyable adventure and a good intro to a new manga, which is nice as it is sometimes intimidating to start something with upwards of a hundred volumes (I'm looking at you One Piece!).
You meet the main characters, see them fight monsters and get hints that there is more to them but you don't know much and will have to wait for future issues to find out....I definitely enjoyed this, try it; maybe you'll like it too!





Vol 2 of UnOrdinary continues the story of students with super powers but is now exploring the idea that someone is watching all of them and deciding who lives and dies......adding a super creepy watcher organization added to the suspense as we realize more about the main characters and their motivations.  I love how this story is progressing and am looking forward to the next chapter.








This book by Ostertag really hit me hard.  I love that we see the struggle of Mags (Magdelena) as she works, takes care of grandmother (abuela) and does something mysterious in the basement that leaves her exhausted and bloody.  I also adore the sweet romance that is happening when her long lost friend returns and expresses interest in a romantic relationship.  The part that got me, and is taken literally in this story, but is so real as far as trauma/issues/imagery goes, is the "monster"......it's family related, but it's also just for Mags....the working through and learning to accept your monsters (maybe even love them) is a BIG truth on so many levels.....such an amazing book!




Tree of Death is, as it seems, a horror story.  The central idea is that if someone eats from the fruit of this tree, they cannot die, regardless of what is done to them.  The main character is struggling to deal with the murders of his wife and child as well as the public outcry for his attack and murder of those responsible (because as a police officer he is supposed to be better than that).  However, he is determined to figure out how to find the one murderer who lived, and kill him, so he can die in peace.....but then, he finds out that the murderer can't die.....and somehow neither can he.   He struggles with both of these for a bit but decides that he wants to be the hero his daughter believed him to be, and he will look for these terrible eternals and destroy them (with help from a shinigami demon) before he gets to die.  This is NOT a fun, silly adventure but a very cool idea for a story as long as you don't mind the murder and mayhem (definitely for older teens & adults due to the violence).

  Cat Massage Therapy is exactly what it looks like it will be....a sweet, adorable story filled with cute cats and people who adore them.  The basic premise is that these cats (who can talk) give massages, complete with purr therapy and other cat-like cute behaviors and when one man discovers their talent at relaxing him.....he can't help telling everyone.  As their popularity skyrockets, bodegas nearby are finding it hard to stock any tasty treats that the cats might like (they are paid in food, as is proper...don't ask about how they pay rent or how they sign paperwork....you are thinking too much). Klaus by Grant Morrison is an amazing superhero remake of the classic Santa Claus origin story.  As you can see from the cover this Klaus is not overweight and eating cookies, but he DOES magically make toys and defeat evil.  Morrison's classic art makes this into the most fun with a cheesy premise (that actually makes a good, not so cheesy story). Enjoy anytime, don't wait for Christmas to read! Family Style is a biographical tale of a refugee from Vietnam.  It is a touching story told both from the viewpoint of a child and an adult.  It has won some awards in the recent awards season, and is definitely recommended for you to try. Oseman continues the story of Nick and Charlie in vol 5 of Heartstopper.  I do love how Oseman continues to show us not just the main character's stories but the family and friends around them .....and this was very well done. Look on the Bright Side is the continuing story from Go With the Flow and jumps us right back into the character's li

New & Fun Fiction Stories

  This book just called to me with it's colorful art and an interesting premise.....I mean who else besides a custodian cleans up messes of the multiverse?  I love that this important job sounds so......simple.  I adore that the main character had no idea what he was in for and so we got to discover it all alongside him.  Waiters built a story and solid, realistic characters but kept a sense of humor and a bit of common sense for his main character of Vern.  I would definitely recommend this book, it was really a delightful read. I am always a sucker for twisted fairy tales, so seeing this, there was no question of reading it.  I really was surprised at the combination of simplicity and depth to the stories and the art.  On the surface it seems just some simple stories with an LGBT twist, but it goes deeper if you look.... I am constantly learning about how what you expect a story to be is part of what we expect the world to be....and what speculative fiction gets to do is to exami
